As Madyson Amo collapsed to the turf during a mid-September soccer game between Thousand Islands and Copenhagen, she knew what had happened. She knew that twitch and twist in her knee and recognized the popping sound that followed. She knew exactly what it meant when she felt her knee wiggle like one of those inflatable tube men in front of car dealerships or gas stations.

Section 3 announced the seeding for the boys and girls basketball playoffs on Wednesday. In all, 11 Frontier League boys and girls teams are competing in the tournament with first games starting as early as today and continuing through the weekend. Earning No. 1 seeds for the boys playoffs were Lowville in Class B and Lyme in Class D and also earning a top seed was the Copenhagen girls in Class D.

Derrick Lewis, not once but twice, pulled up for a 3-point jumper as the final seconds of the quarter ticked away on clock above the basket. And not once but twice, Lewis’ shot fell through the rim and swished against the net to give Carthage the last say of that quarter. Buzzer-beater one came at the end of the first quarter and buzzer-beater two came at the end of third — in all, Lewis finished with 22 points and four 3-pointers for the Comets, who defeated Watertown, 68-65 in the Frontier League “A” Division boys basketball championship.

Above all else, Tuesday’s game between General Brown and Lowville proved to be a tremendous trailer to what should be a heavyweight battle between the two teams in the Frontier League “B” Division final on Friday.

After spending two seasons in the Northeastern Football Alliance, the Watertown Red and Black are moving back to the Empire Football League, where they spent more than 20 seasons. For coach George Ashcraft, the move is a return to more familiar territory. “[The EFL] is just a better fit for us,” Ashcraft said.

Purple was the theme of the 10th annual Coaches vs. Cancer game between General Brown and Thousand Islands on Saturday afternoon, a contest the Lions won 89-34. Purple T-shirts, purple shoes, purple programs, purple jerseys and even — in Vikings coach Scott Lalonde’s case — purple pants were in abundance.

Between its full-court press and its calculated ball movement along with an assortment of other tactics, the Lowville boys basketball team flexed its muscles against South Lewis on Friday in a Frontier League crossover match. The Red Raiders won, 84-42, to improve to 10-1 overall and remain in a tight race with General Brown for the top spot in the Frontier League “B” Division.

Before LaFargeville’s game against divisional rival Lyme began, Red Knights’ coach Jay Shimel looked around Mickey Willis Memorial Gymnasium and soaked in the scene. The energy in the gym was palpable. From the moment the ball tipped off, there was a buzz in the arena that’s usually reserved for the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

The Copenhagen girls basketball team gave Sandy Creek fits from the jump on Friday night. The Golden Knights, who eventually won the Frontier League crossover match 56-34, played a press defense for the majority of the first half, halting the Comets’ offense while they built up a beefy lead. The Comets were forced to fight for every inch on the court and every point on the scoreboard.
