Following two straight victories last week, the Massachusetts field hockey team fell back to .500 Sunday afternoon following a loss to undefeated No. 4 Syracuse 4-0. The defeat evens the Minutewomen’s record at 2-2 for the season and 1-1 against nationally ranked opponents. After managing to tally one goal in the first half Sunday, the Orange poured on three more in the second to clinch a victory and move to 4-0 in 2015.
The Massachusetts field hockey team secured its second win of the season Thursday, fending off Northeastern 2-1 in overtime. Junior forward Nicole Miller scored the game-winning goal three minutes into the overtime period after Huskies goaltender Becky Garner laid out to block an initial shot that was deflected to Miller who roped it into a wide open net to hand UMass its second straight victory.
The Massachusetts field hockey team followed up a heart-breaking loss in its season opener to New Hampshire Saturday night with a thrilling 2-1 victory over No. 20 Boston University Sunday night. The defense stole the show for both sides during the Minutewomen’s battle with the Terriers that produced only three combined goals.
When the Massachusetts tennis team looks back on its 2014-15 season, it will remember its impressive depth, strong leadership and its menacing doubles play. It was arguably UMass’ most talented roster ever, and the season was hardly boring. But ultimately, the season ended in heartbreaking fashion in a narrow loss to Virginia Commonwealth in the Atlantic 10 Championship match Sunday.
The Massachusetts tennis team couldn’t have scripted a better end to its regular season. The Minutewomen finished at 14-4 (4-0 Atlantic 10), winning seven straight to end the season, including a 7-0 victory over Sacred Heart Sunday in its season finale. Now, UMass heads into the A-10 tournament in an excellent position after finishing its perfect conference record.
The Massachusetts tennis team has put itself in a great position to close out what has been nothing short of a dominant season. UMass (11-4, 3-0 Atlantic 10) has posted a perfect 7-0 record at home and a 3-0 mark in conference play, having won four consecutive games including seven of its last eight.
The Massachusetts tennis team continued its winning ways over spring break, taking two of three dual matches played in Charleston, South Carolina, last week. The Minutewomen closed out the week with victories against conference foe Davidson and the College of Charleston. UMass lost to Samford earlier in the week.
The Massachusetts tennis team is seven games into its spring season, and now enters its most crucial weekend yet as it faces both Providence and Saint Louis. Coming off a narrow loss to nationally-ranked Dartmouth and then a victory against conference foe Fordham, the Minutewomen are in prime position to assert themselves atop the Atlantic 10.
Not many teams are lucky enough to have a regionally ranked athlete on its roster. Fortunately for the Massachusetts tennis team, it has two. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association, prior to the spring season’s start, ranked Ana Yrazusta and Carol Benito as the 10th best doubles team in the Northeast region.
While Sunday afternoons in October are often reserved for watching football, baseball could be felt in the air last Sunday as the Massachusetts baseball team took on Dartmouth College in a fall exhibition game at Earl Lorden Field. UMass prevailed, 7-1, as it beat the Big Green (18-21 last season) behind 12 hits and five stolen bases.
